Diadumenian Antioch as Augustus?
« on: October 11, 2016, 02:05:30 pm »
I don't have McAlee and would appreciate some help. The coin below is of Diadumenian struck at Antioch and is 18mm. I have several of the type, but this is the only laureate head right type I have. All others have bare head with cuirassed bust right. It is BMC 414, and is illustrated on their plate XXIV, 5. But BMC does not say "As Augustus." Does McAlee say it is as Augustus, and does he give a rarity rating?
Thanks.

McAlee's specimen seems to be from the same dies as yours; rated "V.Rare".

Obv. legend not only ends with C, but begins AVT K. McAlee's note: "The legend and laureate head indicate that Diadumenian is Augustus, so this coin was struck in the final weeks of the reign."
