Help in identifying a coin
« on: October 03, 2016, 04:22:49 pm »
I found this coin in a bag of dimes I recently bought and have no idea what or where it is from. I am excited about it but have no idea how to research it as I usually collect on US currency. Anyone have any ideas?

Please help and thanks in advance.

It looks like a drachm of some of the earlier Sasanian kings like Shapur I or II: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?term=sasanid*+%28shapur+schapur%29+drachm*&category=1-2&en=1&de=1&fr=1&it=1&es=1&ot=1&images=1&currency=usd&thesaurus=1&order=1&company=

But I have no idea whether the coin is genuin or not  :-\ .

Thank you Altamura.  How'd you do that so quick?

And how does one authenticate an ancient coin?

I already had seen this type somewhere, so I just recognized it  :).

The best is to show the coin to someone who is experienced in ancient coins (in ancient ones, not only in modern), for example a notable dealer.

The first step and the lowest effort would be to post larger pictures. It is often not possible to definitely authenticate coins from photos but you can give an educated guess with good pictures.

Fill the space with the coin, and don't bother with the modern one for comparison. Anyone who knows about these will know what size they are, but the diameter and weight would be useful.

In the interests of getting this topic to a satisfactory conclusion, i took the liberty of editing your image Timothy H.

P.S Don't forget the size & weight of your coin.

If it is about the size of a dime, it is not a dirham, but maybe a 1/2 dirham.

Also couple of better photos will be really helpful.

From those poor photos , the style looks pure Sassanian ( coins struck under Sassanian empire ( Different than Arab- Sassanian ( coins struck under the first four Qualifas ( Abu Baker , Umar , Othman, and Ali . And the Ummayad family which they usually have
the local ruler name ( prince of Iraq & Khoura' ssan first was Saad bin Abi Waqass ) under the Qalifa (( head of Islamic state ))

Over all , I have never seen half  Dirham (Drachm)  ( In hand ), must be really interesting , that is if your coin was official and authentic.

We all waiting for better photos.
Thank you.

At about 4 grams, this would be a dirham.  Most were around 3.6 grams.
