Antoninus Pius Zeus/Herakles
« on: September 19, 2016, 03:24:25 pm »
Another one has me stumped. It is a bronze Provincial of Antoninus Pius with a reverse of either Zeus or Herakles...I think. It is 21mm, 4.29 gm, and 6h. The obverse legend on the left is AYTOK CEB....A combination not in RPC 4 for him.
I looked through RPC 4 on line with no success. There is a rough similarity to the coin from Flaviopolis, but the obverse legend doesn't match.
The head of Zeus/Herakles may have an object or letter before his chin. The only letters I can make out on the reverse, at 3 o'clock are either AC or ΩC....and i cannot be sure of that either.
Any help would be appreciated.

I found one at Wildwinds , very close to yours A21 , Herakles  (but   K left )   from Kallatis, Thrace.

AMNG 296b (Ruzicka in ZfN 1913); RPC online 4547 var (K in right field).

At first , looked to me , Aesculapius head.

Pete,

I recommend submitting yours to RPC. It definitely seems to be a bust variety (no cloak on yours), and may also be one of the better specimens known.

Good ID by Sam!
