Small thick coin (3mm). Maybe Egyptian? Ae 15.9~16.5mm. 5.18g. Obv: Zeus or Herakles Rev: Eagle l. on thunderbolt ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ (saviour). Any help with attribution would be much appreciated.

This seems to be an unpublished type from an unidentified mint. There exists a smaller denomination as well.
In the german forum we had some time ago a perhaps a bit lengthy discussion about that, but nobody did find out from where this coin could be: http://www.numismatikforum.de/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=50269

I have seen something like this attributed to a Ptolemaic garrison in northern Greece, but I cannot remember where,

Hi ddwau, it seems I have a smaller brother of yours, have a look at my post:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=109301.0

I have had a look at what Altamura says and it seems that these coins are unidentified yet, let's see if in a future we make it.

Please let me know with any neews and, I will do the same.

King regards

Ptolemaic coins are not my thing, but the legends on your coin and the opening Numismatikforum specimen seem to bear out a Ptolemaic ID: . . .  :Greek_Alpha::Greek_Iota::Greek_Omicron::Greek_Upsilon:  :GreeK_Sigma::Greek_Omega::Greek_Tau::Greek_Eta::Greek_Rho::Greek_Omicron::GreeK_Sigma: (your coin, interestingly, . . . :Greek_Iota::Greek_Omicron::GreeK_Sigma:   :GreeK_Sigma::Greek_Omega::Greek_Tau::Greek_Eta::Greek_Rho:) for Ptolemaios Soter.

The legend is definitely ΔΙΟΣ ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ (said to be found on a Ptolemaic coin which is totally dissimilar) but also referenced in an old text (Historia Numenorum by Barklay V. Head 1887) to be a remarkable inscription of Agrigentum where a coin is described (no image) with a similar reverse but as having the young head of Zeus Soter on the obverse.
I have a second countermarked coin clearly showing the ΔΙΟΣ below. Sadly this is as far as I have been able to progress.

... to be a remarkable inscription of Agrigentum where a coin is described (no image) with a similar reverse but as having the young head of Zeus Soter on the obverse. ...

Here it can be seen a picture from this coin from Agrigentum, but its style is completely different: http://www.magnagraecia.nl/coins/Area_II_map/Akragas_map/descrAkraC_123.html

In the german forum we had a discussion about this type some time ago ( http://www.numismatikforum.de/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=50269 ), but the only result was that it is probably some sort of temple coinage. There is no hint from where the coin is  :( .
