Updated. Aptera, crete? Athena/Ares torch Greek coin Help.
« on: September 13, 2016, 09:25:15 pm »
I have a Greek that appears to be Athena on the obverse.  At first, I thought the back had a bunch of grapes, but the the stem is coming out of the wrong side and what is left of the legend seems to confirm it.  I'm stumped.

Thanks,
Nathan

The reverse looks like a race torch to me.

Hi folks,

The reverse may be a naval trophy or anchor.

Meepzorp,

Thanks for that idea.  Do you happen to have an examples of that type that I can see?

I have tried to highlight what part of the legend I can see.

Hi Nathan,

When I saw your coin, it reminded me of the Sextus Pompey AR denarius depicting a naval trophy on the reverse. It is just a guess.

I have an example of that type, but it isn't posted in my website yet.

Well,  I still haven't found this one and I decided to try again.   I am wondering if it could be Aptera in Crete.  One of the reverses on acsearch is very similar,  but I cannot find an Aptera bronze with Athena?  On the obverse.   Does anybody know of any helmeted Aptera bronzes?

Thanks,
Nathan

I think it is a torch too but will look at dolphins too.   I cannot seem to find a helmeted head right with a race torch on the reverse with legend below.   That one acsearch auction I found is the closest I have come.  It is also rather thick and feels earlier.

Thanks for the tips.

Try Crete, Aptera.  I just saw a remarkably similar coin listed with that heading on eBay, allegedly unpublished.  I'll try and post the picture tomorrow.

AE12, 1.42g.  Says Ares obverse and I think yours does show Ares, not Athena.  Hopefully I can upload the screen shot from my phone.

I just noticed you suggested Aptera already!

Thanks for that listing.   I had found an Aptera reverse that was close but not the helmeted obverse.

This is exciting.   Any idea how to research a type that is "apparently unpublised"...with two similar specimens?  Lol.
