Video: Nero's Rotaing Dining Room (includes coin!)
« on: September 02, 2016, 09:36:18 pm »
Hi all,
Many of us have seen the many news stories over the last few years about the column of masonary found that was at one time (supposedly) the base of Nero's legendary rotating dining room. I'd read those too but the information was always so vague...

Anyway, this video is worth a watch and is more in-depth than those news stories... and includes a minute or so about a coin that may have some tie to the construction. Check it out!

Very interesting. But the bit about the coin is very speculative. The 'MAC' in the inscription is generally taken to be the Macellum Magnum, Nero's Great Provision Market, known to have been completed in 59 A.D. It was supposedly close to the Temple of Claudius on the Caelian Hill.

Back in 2012, this is where they found a Neronian buttress system on the SE side of the Palatine that the Domus Aurea extended further than previously thought.  Ive read about this fine of Nero's rotating dining room and thought it would have been found on the other side of the Flavian ampitheater, so this is amazing how large the structure was!   Dont know about the numismatic evidence, but interesting as previously stated.   Thanks for sharing.

Here is the video from 2012

Thanks Josh and Joe, especially for the video links. Very, very interesting. It just shows what has lost after the collapse of the classical world. It wold be many centuries before such examples of architectural skill would again be possible.
