AE prov. with temple reverse
« on: August 20, 2016, 12:47:57 pm »
AE 20 mm, 4.65 g

Am bleary eyed trying to determine where this is from.  Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks much.

To my eyes looks like Domitian or Titus.

Added*  Are you sure about the weight ?

Moesia  Tomis (?)  :)

Hi Sam,

I thought it looked like Titus, but the markings around the temple for the  emperors  didn't look right for any of the Flavians.  Weight is correct (actually 4.67 g).  The resemblance to Tomis does seem closer than others.  Thank you.

I say Domitian too ,  I can see the T on right of the temple.

There is one rare from Moesia  Tomis , but for Titus.

Added *   It is listed at acsearch  2.86 gr  Very rare.

Domitian RPC II 404 (here is mine uploaded in coinproject: http://www.coinproject.com/coin_detail.php?coin=299181).

I own also Titus RPC II 403, uploaded in coinproject too (http://www.coinproject.com/coin_detail.php?coin=299179); the portrait is quite different.

Kind regards

Alberto

Thank you all.  I agree Domitian from Tomis.  I also found this Domitian/tetrastyle temple in beaded border, which describes cap and star of the Dioscuri on either side of the gable:
 Pick (Tomis) 2595, p. 679.
It doesn't take much of a stretch of the imagination to classify the blobs at the top as such.

This is very interesting, thanks!

RPC does not mention these attributes, yet they are clearly seen on my coin.
