Caligula AE As. Vesta ??
« on: August 19, 2016, 07:20:13 pm »
Hello everyone:

I got this bronze.

For his condition, it costs very cheap.
But I prefer to learn with cheap things to repent of costly mistakes.

From what I see on the coin, I think it is:

Gaius Caligula AE As. Struck 37-8 AD. C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT, bare head left / VESTA above, S C across field, Vesta seated left, holding patera and sceptre. Cohen 27.

It measures about 30 mm. It is difficult to say how really measure, as it is beaten, battered etc ... and still not own balance.

Are there fakes in this condition?

Thank you for your time and good will.

From already very grateful. :)

There are fakes in all conditions.  Outline of this coin is odd--most are usually close to round.  It looks as if it has been hammered around the rim.

The lettering is a bit odd too.  Hard to tell exactly what is going on.  Could be a contemporary imitation.  Or an original that has been "abused", perhaps hammered, during Caligula's damnation memoriae??

Coins got hammered for various reasons, f.e. to create gaming tokens. While it is hard to judge a coin like this, that doesn't mean it has to be doubtful - yours is probably genuine, although it obviously has had a tough past.
