Hadrian's Denarius - Unpublished coin?
« on: August 17, 2016, 04:30:49 am »
Good morning,

My name is Alessio and I am writing from Italy.
As my first post on this wonderful forum, I'd like to share with you this Hadrian's denarius:
Diameter 18mm / Weight 3,425g
Rome - 125-128 b.C.
D: HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS - Laureate, draped head right
R: COS III - Rome standing left with spear holding Victory
This coin is a variation not listed in RIC (RIC 161 VAR).
In fact RIC lists for this coin only two different kinds of bust:

c) Laureate head right (e.g. http://numismatics.org/collection/1956.127.181)

d) Laureate head right with drapery on left shoulder (e.g. http://numismatics.org/collection/1956.127.175)

whereas in this case bust is type e) Laureate, draped head right.

I looked on the web for this coin but with no result.

So, what do you think of this coin? Is it really unpublished?

Thank you

Alessio

hello and welcome here,

coin is also listed under
Strack 175; RSC 349; BMCRE 361-2;

its a Var on RIC 161 so listed just variant bust unknown and rare bust

Hello Eric and thank you for your reply!
So is this particular kind of bust unlisted in all these other books too?

Strack's bust type γ, not attested by him with this rev. type.

Seaby very carefully and reliably excerpted Strack; so if a particular variant is not in Roman Silver Coins II, it will not be in Strack either.
