ID for lead artifact, please
« on: August 15, 2016, 05:53:06 pm »
Ave!

Lead; 33mm x 29mm/ 21.4gm

With a nice floral motif, I think that is artifact was once round and was crushed flat.
No clue as to the era or use. FYI - It was ground found in Hungary. Islamic?

Best to all,

Kevin

No idea.  Hard to see the decoration but it looks vegetal.  Could be Roman, or Turkish, or something else....

Sewing thimble? (It's hard to grasp the size from a photo and measurements alone.)

I think it is a bit big, unless there were thumb thimbles.  Maybe there were.

I was wondering about the sheath or wrapping for a rod or dowel.  Maybe part of furniture?  Could also be the end of a spout ot tap?

Looks like a fragment from a votive lead mirror.  Common grave good from the Balkans, usually with mica insert.

Ave!

Lead; 33mm (length) x 19mm (top) x 23mm (bottom)/ 28.8gm

I finally got around to sending it my metal smith friend who opened it up for me.

Any further thoughts are always appreciated!

I don't know what it is, but your friend did a nice job.

Ave Joe!

Season's Greetings to you and all your family. Sheri and I are well and simply prime.  :)

Yes, my friend is truly a master smith and can fix/repair/restore pretty much anything made of metal.

For instance, he was able to restore these two horribly rusted and bent iron spear points for us, which I thought was impossible.

Let me know if you'd like me to hook you up with him; easy to work with, fast and inexpensive.

Best regards,

Kevin

That's impressive work!

I wonder if the spear heads were bent as a votive offering.

No doubt.

Any further thoughts concerning the lead cylinder?

I still think decoration for a staff or furniture post or something.

No real idea.
