Greek coin, ID Help. Odd Reverse
« on: August 13, 2016, 09:38:20 pm »
I apologize the pictures are not clearer.

I have a Greek coin that I have no idea on.

It is 3.55g & 17mm.

Obv: appears to be Apollo? facing right.

Rev: No idea.  Not really sure what way to even orient it.

Thanks,
Nathan

Hi Nathan,

If you rotate the reverse 90 degrees, it may be an animal (a lion?).

Hello Nathan:

Turning the reverse 90ยบ  can it be a horse?

The head reminds me of Tanit coins of ancient Carthage. Zeugitana.

There are with several types of horses ...

I hope to be helpful and not complicate the search.

Greetings. :)

I apologize the pictures are not clearer.

or smaller.

really hard to tell, although i agree with Daniel that the coin kinda looks Punic. but if that is so then i would suggest the portrait (which is facing left, btw) looks more like Triptolemus wreathed in corn rather than Tanit. this would also support the idea of a horse on the reverse.

i'm assuming the coin is bronze?

I have retaken a photo of the reverse and re-oriented it.  (I tried to make it smaller, too).

Thanks for your help.  I can see a horse now, especially if it appears to be grazing.

The flan and the Apollo head look to me more like a 3rd - 2nd c BC Macedonian or Thracian coin than a Punic / Cathaginian one.  I think your reverse is a horse and rider - they are often crude and poorly struck as the flan is slightly concave on that side.

Thanks for the tip.   Do you think it it's a horse grazing?  I'd do,  do have any idea what that line from the edge to the "horse's neck" might be?

Yes,  it is definitely bronzish.

I was thinking horse galloping right, horseman with arm raised, and that the big semi-circle is actually corrosion.

But all I can find are ones with head right and horse right or head left and horse left.  Maybe I am imaging the horse???

Yeah,  that was why I was intrigued about the Punic idea.    I wonder if the "wild" hair of "Apollo" could help.

Thanks!

I have kept looking at this piece and I am wondering if the face on the front is Kore Persephone, similar to the Greek coin from Thurium that Meepzorp posted on his page.  Definitely looks like the "spiked wreath" described on his coin.
