Cleaning a silver coin with green spots
« on: August 10, 2016, 09:22:32 pm »
Hi all,

Apologies if this has been asked before. I have a silver denarius with green spots on the reverse which I take to be oxidised copper,  either leached out from the interior or from burial. What's the best way to remove the spots? Acetone soak with a toothpick?

A toothpick and some lemon juice should do the trick. To be honest though, I'd leave it alone. The coin looks perfectly fine as is.

Hello David,

Thanks for the reply. I'll just leave it as it is as you advise then. :)

Ave!

As this is a 'Coin Cleaning' board, my advise is to make a thick paste of baking soda, dab the paste onto a thin cotton towel, then apply the paste to both sides of the coin in circular motions. Rinse and repeat as necessary. That easy and no harm to your coin.

Best,

Kevin
