Re-toning cleaned silver coins naturally
« on: August 02, 2016, 01:36:28 pm »
What are the preferred methods to naturally re-tone a silver coin?  I know it's a lengthy process, but I would rather have a natural toned coin. I'm thinking taking it out of the flip is probably a must? Better to keep in bright light or in a dark drawer? How long does it take to start seeing any results? Would like to hear some of your experiences with this. Thanks!

I have never tried it, but I have heard that if you put a silver coin under a lid with a broken egg (I don't know the exact arrangement), it will tone quickly. This is exactly the same natural process that will occur if you just leave it out on a windowsill, just sped up by sulfur in the egg.

Ave!

I have never tried it, but I have heard that if you put a silver coin under a lid with a broken egg (I don't know the exact arrangement), it will tone quickly. This is exactly the same natural process that will occur if you just leave it out on a windowsill, just sped up by sulfur in the egg.

Boil the egg for 3-4 minutes, crush it well, then place the coin and the broken egg into sealed baggy. It actually works...but a bit messy. :-)

Best,

Kevin
