Radiate depicting decastyle temple
« on: July 20, 2016, 10:26:35 pm »
Hello,
Please help me ID this one. It's a radiate coin, perhaps a dupondius.
The reverse shows a decastyle temple.  I saw decastyle sestertii only for Antoninus Pius and Hadrian (scarce).
The face on my coin is mode like Trajan's or Caracalla's.

26,3 mm , 10.2 g.

Thanks.

I analysed the coin some more, and there is a possibility to be octastyle temple, not decastyle. I highlited in red what i can see on the coin.
It doesn't seem to be anything in the middle of the temple.

Anyway, could it be a dupondius for this type ?

The problem is that you can´t exclude the provincial coins, e.g. this one looks similar, like many others too:

I first guess is that it's Koinon of Bithynia.  But it's too worn for me to see the necessary details.

It looks like Hadrian Koinon of Bithynia to me too.

Thank you Tom. Hadrian , Koinon of Bithynia it is indeed.
The big space under the temple on the reverse gives the posibility to be some legend or a representation.
But seeing the example in the link i can now figure out the legend.
I thougt it was a dupondius jundging by it's size and weight. But the Biythinian coin fits the measurements.

I cant help much with the identification, but if this coin was mine, as there is zero patination remaining I would give it a clean up under running water using a soft brass bristle brush / dremel tool combo to remove the remaining crud back to bare metal, then repaternate using Jax or similar... ( or you can just wait, patina develops naturally after all!!! )

I know this goes against all the regular rules, but as you will end up with a more attractive coin, and most likely reveal greater detail, a brutal approach would be acceptable.. ( IMHO )

 Best wishes,

Lee.

Hi folks,

I immediately suspected Bithynia, Koinon also.

Here is my example:
