Request for translation help
« on: June 17, 2016, 05:07:28 pm »
This is an AE 32, 13 g. wide rimmed Chinese charm/coin.   On the obverse I know is 'Ji Xiang Ru Yi'.  I need translation help on the reverse.  Don't have a clue.  Thanks in advance for any help.

The reverse needs to be rotated 45 degrees clockwise.  I haven't used my Matthew's dictionary in a while but if I get a chance soon I'll look it up.

You're right.  That was sloppy of me.  The first word in on the left.

The symbol at 3 o'clock is "wu" .  I'll try attaching a pic of the basic entry.

Yes, Thank You, I found that one now in the old 'Teach Yourself Chinese' book that I have that has a 'dictionary' of sorts in the back.  Even finding simple distinctive symbols is difficult.   Now I can try to find a 'amulet' phrase into which that term would fit.  In the case of the other item I posted, the symbol at 3 o'clock is also quite simple and distinctive and I think it may be ssu' but am not  sure.

"may you enjoy boundless longevity" or  "long may you live"

normally a wish for the emperor

Thank You,  I see transliterating individual words really does not work so well .

Sometimes not, but in this case it works:

google translator results:

萬 Ten thousand
壽 life
無 no
border

Ten thousand lifes no border

which is basically the same as "long may you live"

In the past, I'd run into trouble translating a name but not realizing it was a name, and coming up with awkward (and sometimes hilarious) translations.

The characters are in traditional Chinese script (vs simplified) which will make it a little more difficult as well.
