Heraclius Follis
« on: June 04, 2016, 09:44:39 am »
I post this follis of Heraclius which I got recently.
I presume it is SBCV 810. 28mm, 9.23gm.

I read the obverse inscription - DN FO and wondered, how on earth does an F fit into Heraclius? Then whoops!- it's struck on an older follis of Focas! Which explains Heraclius' rather odd looking 'legs'. After a little more research I realised that this combination is quite common. I suppose my question is, which Sear number is the original follis, and which the mint?
In passing I'd like to say what a wonderful resource this forum is, what a tremendous education it is reading the discussions, and how patient all you experts are with a dumb newbie.

I'm thinking the Heraclius is much more likely to be SBCV 805. Can anyone give me some clues about the Focas minting?

On the reverse, it looks like  :Tcurl2: :Greek_Eta: :Greek_epsilon: :U: :Greek_Rho: in exergue and there appears to be a big  :Greek_Iota: on the right. So,  SBCV 671 from Antioch, struck in regnal year one (602/3 CE).

Thanks so much, Bill. I think I can make out the mintmark as THUP now, as in one of the SBCV coins at 671, and on the other side the NE PE AUG. (PE AUG I can understand, but not what the NE stands for - but I'll find out eventually -perhaps Numiswiki  :) :))
