Kuna Brooch...?
« on: June 02, 2016, 07:53:40 pm »
Ave!

Copper alloy; 31mm/3.0gm, c. 2nd-3rd Cent.

This delicate brooch features a "Kuna", a martin-like animal that had a valuable pelt and was found in Croatia. In fact, modern Croatia names their money as Kuna. The Kuna was certainly known to the citizens back in the 1st-3rd century and it is represented in this brooch/fibula.

Once apon a time, when created, this brooch was not only silvered but also had enameling in the center.

Not noted in Hattatt. Please correct me if I'm wrong, okay?

Best to all,

Kevin

Not a Kuna, just looks that way.  Both sides are broken and when all loops are present it looks nothing like a kuna or weasel.

Some think this style is just decorative, others that it represents a vessel with handles (you have to turn it 90 degrees sideways).
