Lucius Verus AE As Victoria and Trophy, Reference needed.
« on: May 26, 2016, 05:08:40 pm »
Hello all,
I bought this AE As of Lucius Verus over a month ago and have not been able to find an example online to match it for a reference.
Here are the specifics:

Obverse: L VE-RVS AVG ARM-..., laureate bust right.
Reverse: TR P VI IMP IIII COS II, Victoria, standing left, setting up a Trophy. S-C across fields.
Weight: 13:14 g, Dimensions: 28 x 25.8 x 3.2 mm

Thank you

Hi,

I think it is:

Lucius Verus
As
Rome Mint, December 165 – Summer 166 AD
Obv: L VERVS AVG ARM PARTH MAX
Laureate bust right
Rev: TRP VI IMP III COS II SC
Victory standing left holding branch attending to trophy of arms on the left
RIC 1448

What you are reading as IMP IIII is IMP III C

Regards,

Mauseus

Hello Mauseus,
Many thanks for your help  +++
Attached is a close up of the reverse of the coin, I'm sure it shows "IMP IIII C..." rather than "IMP III C..."

In the photo below compare the "C" shape of Consultum with the "C" I am sure follows "IMP IIII" which are similar whilst the fourth "I" of "IMP IIII" does not look like a C but an I as the previous three.

Hi,

You may be right there. I thought what you are seeing as the C was an O but I doubt mysef now.

But thank you all the same Mauseus, at the very least I know what the full obverse legend is. +++

I have noted such an As with IMP IIII, coll. Bob Effler, Sept. 2007.

I probably made a printout of the picture, but can't easily lay hands on it.

Also two dupondii with the same rev. type and IMP IIII, Lanz Graz IV, 1974, 432 and Sternberg XV, April 1985, by coincidence also lot 432. These two coins from the same die pair, but a different rev. die than your As.
