Ave!

We posted this artifact before but have a new explanation...?

Roman Celtic Soldier Trouser Suspender, ca. 2nd Cent BC -1st Century AD

Copper alloy; 73mm/55gm, beautiful green patina that could be enhanced with Ren Wax and a buff.

It was explained to me in Serbia that this buckle was worn over the wearers back. The single loop was attached to the back of the wearer pants and the two other loops were attached to the front of the trousers, similar to today.

As you know, the Roman soldiers wore skirts rather than pantaloons...the obvious sign of a Celtic barbarian. Once the Romans began their control of the Eastern provinces, they began to recruit Celtic members into their Legions.

Any thoughts?

Best,,

Kevin

Highly skeptical.  Does not look to be that old.  The design and the shape of the cut-outs look like the Byzantine (7th-8th century) buckles found in Serbia and Bulgaria.  Almost certain it is a strap junction from that era.
