Metellus elephant necktie?
« on: May 17, 2016, 08:55:00 pm »
I recently acquired the  Q. Caecilius Metellus Pius Elephant show below.

I notice a large portion of Crawford 374/1 images (available online) show something hanging from the neck of the Elephant as in my example.
I have been unable to find a description that mentions or names this object.

What is hanging from the elephant's neck?

BMCRR II, p. 357, no. 43: "Elephant, with bell hanging from its neck, walking l."

Elephant's head with bell attached also used as symbol on Crawford 262.

Thanks Curtis
I would have never guessed a bell

Anyone know if there is some reference in Roman history to Elephants wearing bells?

Hi folks,

It is probably a bell.

But there is a possibility that it could be something else. For example, it may be some sort of vessel, a vessel that holds something. As an analogy, think about how a Saint Bernard dog is sometimes depicted wearing a barrel (containing liquor) hanging from its collar.

The Romans were known for tying small bells to their pets' collars. In fact, I have one. So, it wouldn't be a stretch to have a somewhat larger bell hanging from an elephant's neck.

In modern times, cows often wear bells.
