AE 15.5 mm
max; 2.10 g
I'm looking for the correct way to reference this coin.
This is the exact specimen shown in
Wildwinds, under
Moushmov 449, and described in the text as :
AE13 [
sic]
provincial of Markianopolis.
Obverse:
Bust of a young
Caracalla, laureate, facing right. (A)NTONI(NOS).
Reverse: (
MAR)KIANOPOLE(ITON), A
serpent climbing right
leg of a tripod
altar.
The "sipping
serpent" is a reference to
Hygieia, the
Greek counterpart of the
Roman Salus. References: Not in
Sear Greek Imperials or SNGCop
It does not really resemble
Moushmov 449, in that the
Moushmov has the
snake entwined around the center tripod
leg and "sipping" facing right. The
legend differs as well.
So, if not in
Sear or
SNG Cop., and not
Moushmov 449, and with no other examples that I've been able to find online--what is it? Thanks much.
