Diadumenian or not?
« on: May 11, 2016, 10:57:22 am »
Hi,
AR  1.50g.
I have posted this coin three days ago before it was cleaned as ''Roman AE'' .
But after cleaning the coin I found out that it is probably a quinarius of Didumenian!
Reverse looks the same including the legend.
Obverse looks similar but the legend doesn't seem to be M.OPEL.DIADVMENIANVS CAES !
Can I have your view on the subject please.
Thank you.

Is that a casting seam I see at the top edge of the reverse image of the coin?

Certainly NOT Diadumenian!

Obverse clearly reads: P C L VALERIANVS NOB CAES

Appears to concord with RIC Va p.119 #30 and with the
image shown on plate IV, 68.

However, such a rarity must be taken with great reserve
until it can be properly verified. Take it to an expert in the
specific field of ancient coins (not just 'any' dealer) and
have them examine the piece VERY closely *in hand*.

This could very well be a copy or other fake that has been
artificially toned, weathered, and "aged" to give the false
appearance of being ancient. I seem to recall that this (or
similar) was something that was forged by Becker.

If not a fake, then you may have a lucky find.

Thank you very much for your help Walter.
One more question! This coin seems to be pure silver!
But the quinarius of Valerian II in Sear 3067 is base silver?
What does this means?

I think it is more likely fake than genuine.  I suggest no further cleaning.
