Septimius Severus, IMP II, Fortuna (Hilaritas)
« on: May 01, 2016, 03:58:55 pm »
A new addition to my collection. A Septimius Severus denarius from the eastern IMP II issue.

I have seen coins of this reverse type with with short legends e.g. FORT REDVC etc. but I haven't come across a longer legend variety before. I cannot fully make out the reverse legend but have placed it as I read it as REDVCC.

Denarius
Obv:- L SEPT SEV PE-RET AVG IMP I - I, laureate head right
Rev:- FORTVN R-EDVCC (sic), Fortuna (Hilaritas), standing front, head left, holding long palm and cornucopiae.
Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare. A.D. 194
Reference(s) – BMC -. RIC -. RSC -.

Regards,
Martin

Apparently REDVCV, followed by a dot. Not that that makes any sense either!

See Barry Murphy's Severan Denarii site, no. 123; that coin now in my collection, from the same dies as yours.

Many thanks Curtis. I hadn't checked through Barry's site. I will update my files with the updated reading.

I think the final V looks like a C or G just because of a die break from the top of the V (l. side) to the border of dots.

If you compare in the legend the other V or C, after I suggested the last letter are mostly G
