Help with obverse legend on Commodus Dupondius
« on: April 16, 2016, 05:45:58 am »
Hi there,

I have a Commodus dupondius which has a legend on the obverse that doesn't match with the one listed in RIC III (335).

It is meant to read M ANTONINVS COMMODVS AVG

Instead, mine has the COMMODVS before the ANTONINVS.

I've checked with ERIC II aswell and there is no such dupondius listed with my legend.

I'm totally confused!

I've attached photos to help.

Thanks  :)

Paul

BMCRE has FEL AVG TR P VII IMP III COS III P P - S-C of this type with a matching obverse on page 778 annotated with a * meaning that they don't have one, this in turn cites Cohen 111. Checking Cohen, this does seem to match and cites the Paris collection.

Regards,
Martin

Does you reverse legend read FEL or FELI? I don't think I have seen FELI before.

I think the I of FELI should be a dot like the dot after AVG.
