Members Gallery Nominations
« on: April 13, 2016, 02:44:04 am »

I am asking members to nominate any gallery which they think is worthy of particular recognition.

Enodia has obviously given this matter a bit of thought and the initial criteria suggested by him are good ones and I have listed them below.

The gallery should be well presented, with dates, denominations and details all clear and easily accessible.

The coins must be shown clearly. This is not a photo contest, but if the coins aren't clearly presented then the gallery is of little educational value.

Any vital or incidental historical data would be appreciated, as would any provenances and past sales history if available.

This is not a "Best of the Type" competition, it is simply an attempt to increase the visitor numbers to the Members' Gallery section and at the same time give some sort of recognition to those Members who have taken the time and effort to make their Galleries an attractive, interesting and enjoyable experience for the public at large.

Thanks for your time.

*Alex

I have been in awe of Schatz's gallery since its launching about two years ago:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/index.php?cat=24483

It is at this point perhaps the most impressive and best organized individual collection of Parthian coins on the Web.  Importantly, it is also an excellent research tool for collectors of the series.  The breadth of the collection, the detailed attribution and provenance that it provides for each entry, and the quality of the photography are remarkable.

It is highly deserving of recognition and promotion.  Please consider Schatz's gallery to be enthusiastically nominated!

+++  I second the nomination of Schatz' Parthian gallery. When this gallery was first brought to my attention, I recall praising Schatz for the service she was providing to beginning Parthian collectors. I don't collect Parthian coins, but if I did, I'd want to know about Schatz' gallery!

One correction, Carausius: Schatz is a she.

There are several galleries that deserve far more views and that I greatly admire, but Schatz was the first to come to my mind too. Surely one of the finest private collection of Parthian coins in existence, spanning all periods, with provenances from all the big names and collections. Many specimens in the collection must be the finest known. And I understand that the bronzes are yet to come! Browsing this gallery is a real pleasure and an eye-opening experience.

I also love:

n.igma - Many fantastic and beautiful rarities with far too few views. Great, coin specific information too from a collector who is clearly an expert in their field.
Charles S - Many Forvm members will be familiar with this collectors' gems, and yet the pickings are so rich that many incredible pieces sit ignored.
Gabalor - Amazing collection covering the breadth of Gaulish/French history; many extreme rarities and beauties.
PYL - More than 200 coins of Postumus, including a wonderful selection of sestertii/double sestertii.

There are many more that deserve mention. I do hope this thread leads to greater appreciation of the effort the above have put into sharing their important collections. They certainly have my gratitude.

I nominate David Atherton. His collection of Flavians is amazing and his gallery provides a rich source for research given the interesting information he provides about each coin.

All of the above mentioned are more than worthy.  But how will this work?  Constant nominations each week?  It's the same few people still doing the nominations.  How will we create awareness for these galleries?

Maybe a link in numiswiki next to the webpage awards.  Will there be polls so the members vote?

Will there be polls so the members vote?

good questions, and one of the reasons i didn't want to rush this into existance. it obviously still needs some more thought.

one idea i was thinking of was having a weekly thread like this one, with a poll at the end of the week to determine the gallery considered most worthy (i hate that term though), and then a monthly poll to give a wreath or somesuch recognition to the gallery with the most votes. this gallery would then be out of future polling consideration.
but this is just one idea, and i'd like to hear more.

in the meantime we can still show our appreciation of these galleries by leaving some comments! i think everyone with a public gallery likes to see a new comment when they log in.

(btw Jay, you and David Atherton were 2 of the first names i thought of when this first occurred to me.   :)   )

Thank you orfew for the nomination, and thank you Peter for the kind words.

A lot of great galleries are mentioned here, the cream of the crop as they say. If Martin's needs a second I wish to do so. Many years ago when I first started uploading and organising my gallery his was one I used as model.

Thanks Peter

Is there a way to compile total views or comments for an entire gallery?  Maybe we could start with "most viewed" or "most comments" as a whole... ???

Surely , all nominees  do have exceptional collections and so do other unknown , known members here at FORVM ,  and you are welcome.
I would have been also honored to mention Andrew McCabe 's gigantic collection , but it looks like it is not on gallery files.

With a special thank to Robert Brenchley, *Alex, Enodia for taking care of this file , as always a big thank to the big guy , president Joseph Sermarini for all his favors , and to every one helped.
