Umayyads Sulayman - Please Confirm or Correct My Attribution
« on: March 17, 2016, 10:15:44 am »
I recently came across three Umayyads silver Dirhams. Although I cannot read Arabic or Persian, I've done a lot of research only to find my self fairly uncertain of my attributions. I will list the coins in individual posts.

This one I believe is:

Caliph, Sulayman 715 - 717 A.D.
Silver Dirham, 27.75mm max, 2.9g.
Date: AH93 715 A.D.
Mint: Wasit

If anyone can confirm or correct this attribution, it would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you

Manzikert

93  H is correct so that makes it ;

Al-Walid I ibn 'Abd al-Malik (86-96 AH-705-715 AD)          Not Sulyman

Alan is a big help always , I am sure , It totally slipped his Mind.

All the best ,

Yes, I'd forgotten for the moment the convention that when the year covers two reigns the coin is usually attributed to the earlier ruler.

To whom may not know , dealing with Islamic coins ( from that era at least ) is a very hard job.

On probably 75% , The only key is the date .
Which is hard to read on low grade coin.

As example  the number 3 in writing  and the number 6 in writing are very close .
On low grade coins  , some times it is impossible to tell , if 6 or 3.
and that is one one example ...
