Help needed to identify coin with Cilician c/m
« on: February 07, 2016, 07:36:30 am »
Dear Board,

I need help to identify this coin with a Cilician c/m.

The c/m is Howgego 670 from Seleucia ad Calycadnum. According to Howgego this c/m was used mainly on coins of Gordian III.

What is left of the obverse legend is M AVRH ANT indicates together with the portrait that it is an issue of a young Caracalla.

The reverse shows facing portraits of apparently Isis and Serapis, but the reverse legend is almost all gone except a few letters ( see enlarged picture )

Isegrim doesn't give a suitable hit, closest is Irenopolis referring to Imhof-Blumer's KM page 441, #2, the reverse of which is found on plate XVII, but the style is quite different from my coin.

diameter: 25 mm

weight: 9.5 g

Any information is appreciated !

Having tried to find a reference for this coin, I think it is struck at Seleucia ad Calycadnum, which is supported by the c/m. I haven't found a reference for it, though.
