My Trajan `longhead´ Dupondius - obv. legend without NER
« on: November 29, 2015, 03:45:34 pm »
Hello,

a couple of decades ago i stumbled on this Trajan dupondius - i think for the unusual portrait with an elongated head:

Trajan, Rome mint, 114-117 AD.,
Dupondius (ø 25-26,5 mm / 14,40 g), brass ("orichalcum"), axes about coin alignment ↑↓ (ca. 170°),
Obv.: IMP CAES TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS VI P P , his radiate, draped bust facing right, seen from side.
Rev.: SE[NATV]S POPVLV - SQVE ROMANVS / S - C , Felicitas standing half left, holding caduceus and cornucopia.
RIC 674 var. (obv. legend, otherwise common) ; Coh. 353 var.

I saw some other specimens like this on the web but no additional info about rarity or catalogue.

Maybe just a slip of the engraver?

Regards

Woytek, MIR 500v, eight spec. known to him, one illustrated on his pl. 102.

Trajan's obv. legend with OPTIMO, but without NER, is well attested in all denominations, though scarce, so is certainly not an engraver's error. The portrait on your piece is a little unusual, however.
