2 Marcus Aurelius TR P XVII denarii, probably unrecorded
« on: November 26, 2015, 02:54:08 pm »
Hi!

I would like to share these two seemingly common types of Aurelius denarii with Concordia and Providentia. I did not find any analogues in reference books. The 1st is unique with combination of obverse legend and bare head (laur head is noted in RIC). The 2nd is interesting with draped/cuirassed bust that is not noted for this obverse legend

Generally, there were so many different obverse legends in combination many bust types applied in the course of TR P XV - TR P XVII. No surprise that so many variants are still missing in the books.  I assume there are all still around!...

1.    Obv: M ANTONINVS AVG. Bare head right
Rev: PROV DEOR TR P XVII COS III., Providentia standing left, holding globe and  cornucopia.

RIC 66 (var), Cohen (-), RSC (-)

17mm - 2,9g - 0'

2. Obv: M ANTONINVS AVG IMP II, Bare head right, draped cuirassed bust
Rev: CONCORD AVG TR P XVII / COS III, Concordia seated left, holding patera and resting elbow on cornucopia.

RIC 62 (var), Cohen 42 (var), RSC 42 (var.)

18mm - 3,2 g - 0'

Thank you for your time,

Z.

Providentia coin: I have noted two others with head bare right. But doesn't yours have fold of cloak on front shoulder and behind neck, which would make it a new variety?

Concordia coin: new to me too with this bust.

Thank you, Curtis, very sharp eye:)...I did not see this little detail...yes, there is a fold of cloak on far shoulder.. it is very modest, but it is there!
