Engraving mistakes on 6th century bronze coins from
provincial mints are not that uncommon. Errors are always interesting and fun to discover, but mostly do not add appreciably to the value of the coin.
Antioch has a particular reputation for blundered inscriptions, but that really starts after the earthquake of 526 CE. Rebuilding after that catastrophe was hardly
complete before the city was sacked brutally by an invading Persian army in 538 … and then the plague arrived a few years after that! Throughout all those events – and afterwards until the early 7th century – the
mint continued to be active, but
quality control was perhaps not its highest priority.
