Help I/D Roman Republic coin?
« on: November 05, 2015, 09:53:47 pm »
I have had no luck identifying this coin.
2.3 grams and 16 mm.
Jugate heads right.
Looks like dolphin on reverse.

Any help appreciated.

It looks like a Nabatean coin.  Cleaning the reverse will help with a better ID (the dolphin could be a spaceship depending on the way I'm looking at it  ???)

The 'dolphin' looks to be a cornucopia;)

Yes, the bottom picture is upside down.  It would be the left cornucopia, with inscription, and the right cornucopia is off the flan.

Thanks for your help gentlemen.

I think this as a match.
Will try to clean the reverse a bit more - didn't want to risk over cleaning.

BLACK SEA REGION. Uncertain. Ae. (Circa 125-100 BC).
Obv: Jugate heads of the Dioscuri right.
Rev: ΛΑϘA[...].
Cornucopia between piloi of the Dioskouroi surmounted by stars.
Cf. CNG 84, lot 516; Pecunem 29, lot 367; Pecunem 31, lot 25; HGC 7, -.
The reverse legend on this type remains a mystery, as the known examples have yet to point to a more certain attribution.
Weight: 2.70 g.
Diameter: 16 mm.
