Caracalla-Smyrne
« on: February 25, 2021, 07:18:38 am »
Hi,
This interesting Caracalla ae 30 for the city of Smyrne, needs your help.
I found only one example on the internet, the only difference from this coin is the absence of Ω-N in the field on the right and on the left. Rufinus Sophistes Strategos Magistrate.
 straight AVT K MAVP ANTΩNEINOC.
The coin I found on the internet had the following classification: BMC 399 and Sng cop 1380, but while looking through these volumes online.
I couldn't find anything that would lead me to the reverse legend. Iconography is Zeus enthroned with spear and lifts a nike. I kindly ask if it is possible to know the reverse legend and if the classification found is correct.
I thank Roberto

Reverse legend is probably: ΕΠI CΤΡ Κ (or ΚΛ) ΡΟΥΦΙΝΟΥ CΟΦI CΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ

What you can read is: ΕΠ(I?) C______ΥΦΙΝΟΥ CΟΦ(I?) CΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ (ΩΝ of CΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ in the fields)

Thanks shanxi,
in fact I read well: ΕΠI C ....... .... ΥΦΙΝΟΥ CΟΦI CΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ (ΩΝ) in the field.

Characteristic of the reverse legend, also seen in Gordianus coins that the writing in the exergue continues up to the right, in this case up to the AI and continues in the field ΩΝ.
So the legend you proposed seems to me more than likely.

ΕΠI CΤΡ Κ (or ΚΛ) ΡΟΥΦΙΝΟΥ CΟΦI CΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ

Thanks again
Roberto

Hi,

I agree with Shanxi as your coin looks to be the same dies as the specimen in my Forum gallery. I have BMC 399 as a cited reference, although the dies are clearly different as the legend does not continue into the field on the BM specimen. I have not seen the SNG Cop specimen to see if that does the same.

Regards,

Mauseus

BMC 399 is with Nike to right, here on the coin it is to left:
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=njp.32101064003526&view=image&seq=363
So the coin here is BMC 396.

Here you can find a picture of BMC 396:
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=njp.32101064003526&view=image&seq=599

So it will be the legend of BMC 396.
