Vespasian Judaea Capta Sestertius
« on: August 27, 2015, 08:18:05 pm »
The below sestertius to my knowledge is the only one in private hands.  Any one else see one of these?  Nothing in any of the sales records.  It appears to be the second known example.

Vespasian, 69 - 79 AD
AE Sestertius, Lugdunum Mint, 35mm, 24.54 grams
Obverse: IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M TR P P P COS III, Laureate head of Vespasian right.
Reverse: JUDAEA CAPTA S C, Jewess seated right under palm tree mourning. To left of palm tree a Male Jew standing left with hands bound behind back looking left.

To be more specific, Carradice and Buttrey knew only one specimen, in Oxford, when they published their revision of RIC II, Part II, in 2007.

Unfortunately they don't illustrate the Oxford coin, so we can't compare its dies to those of your coin.

Typo in the obv. description: COS VIII not III, and small globe below the bust.

Triton II, lot 847 (same dies). That coin was from the Sofaer Collection, although not listed as such in the catalog.

Thanks Barry.  Determining value for fairly rare coins is hard outside placing them in an auction and seeing what the result is.
