I am stuck on this partial strike.
« on: August 27, 2015, 12:14:57 am »
I have had this coins for a few months, I thought it would be an interesting puzzle but I am ready to give up.

Here is a small flat coin that seems to be late byzantine. Problem is only half of each side seems to be showing.  I am posting it to see if anyone can help. A new pair of eyes always helps.

The coin is flat, does not seem concaved in any way. 15/16mm 1.2gm

The Obv seems to be the Virgin orans. One hand up and I see MP. The rev seems misleading One figure showing but I think it two figures side by side .It has a partial legend as shown.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Simon

I do agree the rev confuses the matter! I am afraid I do not have any ideas with my references.

Could this be a trachy from the Latin Empire rather than mainstream Byzantine?

I have exhausted looking at it as a flat coin, trachy, that did not get curved is very much a possibility and yes it could be Latin. I have put it away again and will look at it again down the road. I still think it is  a solvable puzzle.
