Continuing live updates from Taormina

2015 International Numismatic Congress commentary

https://twitter.com/AMcCabeCoins/tweets/

It's a really small town so 1,000 numismatists really make a difference on Corso Umberto. Bumping into colleagues...

Any suggestions please for a collective noun for numismatists? A purse of numismatists? A hoard of numismatists?

So here's an idea. Suggest collective names for numismatists. Best one(s) get a postcard from Taormina from me but I'll try get whomever is your favorite numismatist (author of your most well worn reference book to sign it too...

In this particular case, given the number present, it should be a 'miliarense' of numismatists. Otherwise, perhaps a 'cabinet'.

Hope you're having fun! :)

I think that would most definitely qualify as a Hoard of Numismatists, if not a Numismatic Hoard!
All historical inquiry is contingent and provisional, and our own prejudices will in due course come under scrutiny by our successors.

I think hoard is the best.  But maybe an "exhibit" of numismatists, to capture the temporary nature.

Or even a "deposit" of numismatists!

I just got my conference goodies bag, took it apart and photographed the contents

Always fun to open these bags. You never know what they'll contain. Though no ancient coins evidently.

Whilst registering I bumped into a group of Forum Coins discussions participants, in fact a Late Roman Bronzes team. So Forum is probably a lot more heavily represented than this thread might suggest! More of us out there keeping our lights under a bushel (such as that lovely bushel on an early Empire quadrans). Chatting with one of our well-published ancient numismatists (the specialist in Imperatorial and Trajanic coinages) about the collective noun for numismatists, he was more intrigued by the autographed postcard than the noun!

About half way point for serious numismatic lectures as latter half of week is weighted towards more relaxed events. Here is where I am

Picture I present is tip of iceberg, the 10% of menu I could personally sample. For more see hastag

(although many great events will go quietly unreported).

Come join us via twitter, still lots of fun ahead

I am neither social media savvy nor inclined, but I have to admit that it has been fun following along on Twitter.  #wishIwasthere.

Of course there is a hashtag #iwishiwasthere but not much to do with this conference!

If you want to get a fuller (25% rather than sub-10%) view of conference numismatics then in addition to my feed, the following are most comprehensive, both from the British Museum.

https://twitter.com/amelia_dowler

https://twitter.com/Moneymedalsnet

If we were to divide the conference into four areas: Greek; Roman; General including archaeology databases museums etc; and later coinage, then I'm probably grabbing one third of the Roman, Amelia one third of the Greek, and Money/Medals one third of the general. So whilst our tweets aren't overlapping much, they still amount at best to perhaps a quarter of the overall content in aggregate.

An ANS feed has some interesting views on the more social side of events

https://twitter.com/adreinhard

The 140 degree vodka views aren't a direction I'm going in partly because the conference is giving me regular opportunities for confidential consultations on numismatic politics and gossip (yes, there's a great deal) which would be inevitably compromised were I to broadcast with whom I was dining/drinking with at any given time! But as a sample taster, on Thursday there'll be a small social event involving Woytek, Burnett, Stannard, Ripolles, Hollstein, Suspene, Parisot and Buttrey, all Roman Republican denizens. That specific gathering is to an extent an homage to past events hosted by RBW, who will not be forgotten, but similar gatherings, small, large and huge, are taking place every day. Still I guess the fact that I'm messaging here at 2am says something even if you don't know what proof vodka I'm drinking...

Incidentally I'd say that those who are tweeting would rate the social-media-savviness of numismatists not so high. Perhaps 2/10. At conferences on other topics you'd expect a tidal wave of twitter and instagram feeds involving a significant proportion of total attendees. Here perhaps just 10 out of 1000 in Taormina have active social media fee

In addition to RPC III, three very important festschrifts published at the Congress today
- in honour of Basil Demetriadi
- in honour of Richard B. Witschonke (+ 2015)
- in honour of Andrew Burnett
I have each in hand now.

Today an extended and somewhat noisy lunch was enjoyed by some key Roman Republican numismatists: Buttrey, Burnett, Molinari, McCabe, Stannard, Woytek, Parisot, Suspene, Hollstein, Ripolles.

As usual, updates continue here:

My final updates from the #XVIntNumisCongr include my pilgrimage to Morgantina. I lifted up the burnt piece of tile where Ted Buttrey found the gold 20 as piece but it was gone.

https://twitter.com/AMcCabeCoins/tweets/

Ted was at the conference but knowing Morgantina well, decided to do the Syracuse day trip instead. He would have made a fantastic guide to the site. Indeed Ted spoke about Morgantina at the Rome conference in 1960. Fortunately here is Ted's story, in fact this is an abridged version of his 1960 Rome speech:

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Hoards.html#Morgantina

It's been such a marvellous week, with informative and entertaining discussions at every turn, many in a social context, and with countless new contacts to be followed up. As my last tweet makes clear, the next conference will be in Warsaw, 20-24th September 2021. And Australia, I'm assuming Melbourne, is currently the lead contender for the congress in the year 2027.

Those unfamiliar with twitter may not appreciate that the four or five messages I've posted on Forum weren't my commentary. These messages just linked to my live commentary on twitter which runs to 150 messages (about 25 each day this week) and about 300 photos, many with detailed numismatic content from slides or posters, many illustrating numismatists attending the conference, and many others showing the ancient world in Sicily.

The commentary is here:

Thank you for the play by play, Andrew.  I'm not a Twitter kind of guy, but I did look at your posts and it was quite interesting.  A fascinating story about TV Buttrey's discoveries on your website.  I can't imagine how exiting that would be to find gold rings and coins in situ like that.

Looks like a wonderful time in an amazing area of the world.  Taoromina is a personal favorite.

Thanks for all the updates, Andrew.  I really enjoyed reading them.

Warsaw 2021, eh?  I wouldnt mind seeing Warsaw and actually have a friend who lives there, studying theatre.  Apparently theatre is pretty popular in Poland.
