Republican 'as' ID
« on: August 25, 2015, 09:28:01 am »
I have a hard time ID-ing this as. By the looks of it, it should be dated 170-158 BC. In my opinion the way the prow is shaped, would fit in this time. Janus head is more difficult, but could fit in.
This coin has text/symbols above the prow. I think it ends on 'C' and begins with 'A', but I could be all wrong.
Any ideas?

I'd say Cr. 196/1 star as. Check the relevant Crawford plate picture - exact same style everything.

I think you are probably right; also compared to the 196 I already had in my collection.

Thanks, Andrew!
