What is this ? Fire starter flint
« on: August 16, 2015, 07:17:23 am »
 Hi Everyone

What is this ? I think is Roman Fire starter flint or Roman tool for skinning. An image of a sitting pig ?
Thank you :)

Very nice!  I think it's a razor.

I am not sure anyone would still shave with flint at that point.

It does not look like it would stand up to any severe beating but perhaps a luxury fire starter - for household use.

Very nice item.

No, a gun flint is a fairly large thick piece which is attached to the flint lock with a simple screw.

This appears to be a finely shaped, thin piece of flint that is fitted into a copper-alloy holder.

That I don't know.  Could be Roman but this type of shallow engraving is also medieval.  I think you would need to find  match to be certain.

Certainly not a gun flint as those were simple stones set in place with leather to keep them from breaking.  Looks to me a cutting tool, but as to age and culture I dont know.

Aleksey above ID'ed it correctly

This is a Musket Flintlock 1700's or so, usually wrapped in a lead sheath or binder. The flintlock musket was the main firearm in Europe late 1600's the early 1800's

 here is a example

I think maybe yours is coming out of the middle east
The Ottomans marched from Istanbul across Syria to meet Napoleon in the late 1700's around Jezreel Valley in Israel at Mount Tabor/Acres and such.
These have all looked like they were coming from a dry environment.

I have seen a few of these floating around on auction sites the last yr or so. Can not say authentic or not but have no reason to doubt it.
