Research Project - NumisWiki Page on Ancient River Names
« on: July 27, 2015, 10:33:00 am »
I would like a NumisWiki page on ancient rivers. My idea is that it would start with a table with four columns:  Ancient Names, Modern Name, Depicted on Coins (Yes or No), location.

Anyone interested in researching and creating this table?  If not, it might take me a long time to find the time.

Hi Joe,
I have a list (somewhere) of a large number of ancient river-gods from
Asia-Minor as depicted on coins (mostly the reclining type, rather than
the man-headed bull types).
It is fairly comprehensive, but may not be complete. I recall compiling it
from three or four sources, and have added pretty much anything new
that I have come across since.
I had planned to do some sort of article/listing some time, but have had
other matters take precedent.
That may be a useful start. The modern names are another thing, a far
greater task I expect.

That sounds like a good start. Can you post it on NumisWiki or here?

I have a list of names of rivers related to man-faced bull types that will be included in Potamikon, but according to our work all are local embodiments of Acheloos (e.g., Acheloos Palagkaios for Agyrion,etc.).  I will upload when complete or you can use it as a reference and extract the local names only.

Hi Joe,
Did you get my email, with the pdf attached therein?
There are 145 rivers, which makes for a good start - I hope.
All the best,

Hi Walter, Yes, thanks, but I haven't had the chance to take a good look at it yet.  Thanks again, Joe
