Frans,
As you note there is no statuette of
Spes on the
Paris sestertius illustrated by
Strack, despite
his description naming
Spes.
The same is true of my specimen shown in the
thread you link to in your first posting above: no
Spes.
Strack cites one other specimen of this
sestertius, in
Berlin. I wonder whether it shows
Spes, like your new acquisition, or omits
Spes, like the coins in
Paris and my
collection? Your coin might be the first
sestertius of this
type to include
Spes.
There is another variant of this
Concordia seated
sestertius that I did not mention in my earlier
thread. It is from the same draped-bust
obv. die as your new coin! On the
rev., however, two changes. First, CONCORD in
exergue is omitted, and instead the S C is placed in
exergue. Second, the
cornucopia is not under Concordia's throne, but rather rests on her seat behind her, and she rests her l. elbow on its mouth.
Spes is not shown; the
cornucopia has taken her place as Concordia's
arm rest.
The best example of this
sestertius, with all details clear, was in
Lanz 60, 1992, lot 477. Two others, from the same die pair, are in
Paris =
Strack III, p. 316, no. 6a (worn and incomplete) and in my
collection (very worn).
Curiously, the
rare dupondii of this
type have CONCORD in
exergue, but use the
type of the variant
sestertii without CONCORD: on the
dupondii too the
cornucopia replaces
Spes as Concordia's
arm rest. Examples in
BMC 1948A (no picture), and four in my
collection, one decent but the other three well worn.
