« on: July 19, 2015, 11:28:58 am »
Hi I have got this silver coin (tested) in a collection I have bought.
Can anyone help me identify it?

Size 27, 8 mm.  Weight 17,94 g

Thank you in advance.

Hadrian from Gaza but I'm not sure of authenticity.

The original ought to be bronze, as best I remember.

it does look soft, or at least the details appear mushy in this image.

i would also like to see a rule of thumb that states 'Greek' coins don't have Roman emperors on them.

"Greek Imperial" (aka "Roman Provincial") coins most often do.

which is why i prefer the term Roman Provincial. these were Roman provinces, not 'Imperial Greece', and the reason why Roman Provential has virtually replaced the older terminolgy, and rightly so, imo.
Roman Imperial means coins of imperial Rome. i'm not even sure what point in history 'Imperial Greece' was.

a matter of semantics, to be sure, but i think it is time for clarity.

not trying to be a prig,

Thank you for your input, I went on the net to do some more researche on Gaza coins, and found no coins of this type made of silver, but I found an almost similar coin that was silver. This coin was a replica to be used as pendant to a neck less, so unfortunately I now am almost sure that it is a replica.

Thank you for your help.

It is definitely a cast fake. It is often good to avoid such absolute statements but sometimes this can lead to confusion.
