Ave,

Copper alloy; 35mm/10.1gm

I can find no reference for this odd, arrow-shaped brooch. In hand, it actually looks like an arrowhead with a phallus point...?

No clue. Help!

Best to all,

Kevin

[NOTE: SUBJECT CHANGED BY ADMIN IT WAS - "Arrow-shaped Brooch Huh"]

Hi Kevin,

It is looking like a big Fly , so called "Zikada" or "Cicada"

and you can see the Numiswiki:
http://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=zoomorphic%20plate%20fibula

Best regards,

Yes, Q is exactly right.

Cicada fibulae were made by Romans, Germans and Huns and I don't know enough yet to tell them apart.  Maybe one day.

I will be working on this one soon.  Any tips beyond what we have in NumisWiki?

Thanks.

No.  I have still not found a good source that shows the differences between Roman era and later ones.

Ave!

Here is another example -

Zoomorphic Cicada/Fly Brooch, Germanic Tribes, ca. 5th - 6th Cent. AD

Copper alloy; 40mm/10.2gm, green patina with copper highlights, pin intact but not moveable.

No.  I have still not found a good source that shows the differences between Roman era and later ones.

Same here.

Best,

Kevin
