Brooch (?), Christ Crucified ID please...
« on: April 18, 2017, 05:30:06 pm »
Ave!

Copper alloy; 49mm/13.5gm

Not really convinced that is a brooch, but it certainly NOT a pendent.

No see in the photo, is that the top protrusion is holed and although broken, I suspect the lower protrusion was the same.
Here are a few questions:

#1 - If not a brooch or a pendent, how was it used/applied?
#2 - If any can tell from the image of Christ and adjuncts, from which organized Church?
Best to all,

Kevin

I think it is called an encolpion...half of it. It once had a similar reverse. And supposedly enclosed a holy relic or one of the forest of slivers of the True Cross. And yes, it had a suspension loop on top and a hinge on the bottom. At least the ones I once had.

Ave Akropolis,

SWEET!  +++ +++ +++

Any idea as to which established church? Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox...?
It was ground-found in the northern Balkans, if that helps.

Best regards,

Kevin

I would GUESS Greek Catholic, because as I recollect the Greek Orthodox split from the Greek/ Roman Catholic church at about 1100 A.D. There were, and still are, Greek and Roman Catholics. I say Greek Catholic because most of the southern Balkans were Greek speaking people...though not necessarily Greek, per se.
Again, I would GUESS that your encolpion  was made in the mid Byzantine period...a wild guess.
Try Googling it..
Good luck,
PeteB
