Unpublished / Unknown Titus Lugdunum As
« on: July 04, 2015, 01:47:01 pm »
Hello

a few days ago I bought this Titus As
that I cannot find in the standard reference.

Titus As
Obv. T CAES IMP AVG TR P COS VI CENSOR, laureate head left.
Rev. VICTORIA AVGVSTI S C, Victoria standing on prora right, holding palm and wreath.
Mint: Lugdunum, 77-78 AD.

27 mm   10.94g

RIC --, cf. 1284.

The obverse legend is known for a few other reverse
types.
This coin belongs to the Iudaea Capta series but I am not sure if the reverse reads VICTORIA AVGVSTI or VICTORIA NAVALIS . I found an example with VICTORIA NAVALIS on wildwinds but the obverse legend states Titus as Pontifex (PON).

Maybe you know other examples of this rare type.

Regards
kc

With obv. AVG F and portrait right not left, rev. NAVALIS, it would be RIC 1274 (C).

A picture would be helpful!

Below the C of S -C I may see the tail of an S, so presumably NAVALIS not AVGVSTI, and RIC 1274 as I suggested.

A very nice specimen apart from the rev. legend loss!

This is a very attractive coin indeed.  I can also see part of the final S of NAVALIS, not the I of AVGVSTI.

Yes, there are, but the problem is that now you have to look under two different RIC numbers to get the newer and older records.  And look under Vespasian (for RIC number) and Titus (for portrait).  Here is at least one under the old RIC number: http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=408570  .  I'm sure you will be able to find more...

Your coin is nice too, but a little different: Rome mint not Lugdunum, COS VIII not COS VI, and reverse legend VICTORIA AVGVSTI not NAVALIS.

nice coin but the obverse legend is "IMP T CAES VESP AVG P M TR P COS VIII" with reverse
"VICTORIA AVGVSTI".

Hello,
Here is a Victoria Navalis Titus As, similar to the coin kc posted. However, the legend and style of the bust are different to Kc's coin. I suspect this is not an issue Lugdunum but rather of the Rome mint.
I have not properly attributed it yet. Would be very grateful for any information.

Thank you!

Hi Eduard,

of course your coin was struck in Rome (not Lugdunum), in 72 A.D..

It's a beautiful example of RIC 471 (Vespasian, R2), same dies as RIC plate coin.

Impressive portrait on such a rare coin.

Congrats

Alberto

Alberto,

Thank you very much for this information. I really appreciate it. Now I know what to look for.
I wish I knew how to easily distinguish a Rome issue from those of another mint.

With regards,

Eduard

AE coins from Lugdunum usually have a globe under the neck.

In any case the different style is immediately recognizable once you become familiar with it.

Of course this is much easier if you specialize.
