Alexandrian dichalkon, unpublished type?
« on: July 03, 2015, 01:58:22 pm »
Hello all,

Back again with another Alexandrian type. It is 13mm/1.15gms

Obv. Ibis standing right within dotted border
Rev. Crocodile?/ ichneumon? left within dotted border

The reverse type is beyond me and the closest I could come was either a crocodile or an  ichneumon.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Elias,
There is an issue attributed to Caligula with an Ibis and a crocodile, but I don't see anything that looks like a date on your coin.  I'm wondering if this is something other than Alexandrian.

Kurt

Edit:  Sorry, Augustus.

Kurt,

I found a couple of the Augustus types...

This type (for some reason attributed to the reign of Trajan by the auction house) doesn't appear to be dated;

Yes, that one does seem to fit with yours better.  However, the BMC coin they cite has a date L KA listed which likely makes it the Augustan issue.

Elias,
I just looked at a magnified version of your picture.  Is that a very small L below, a K at 3:00, and an A 11:00?  If so, I think you may have your answer.

Kurt

You could be onto something there Kurt!

With a little imagination I can almost see all 3 letters :) The 'A' is clearer but would need to clean it up
a little more to be sure about the others and I'm a little reluctant to do it... really nice coin as it is.

ukedem:

I do not see a crocodile on the reverse, but perhaps a baboon or octopus-- neither of which is certain.

Is the coin AE or lead (scratch edge with fingernail to see if it is soft)?

Nice coin!

Being AE and not lead, the coin is less likely to be Alexandrian.

Looks to me like a Hadrian Dichalkon made from two reverse dies, Ibis/Elephant.

Hi Barry:

An interesting idea, but I can not make out any certain dates on either side. Die angle looks like 12h. A tetradrachm struck with 2 obverse dies would be at 6h (and I assume it also applies to 2 reverse dies), however these small issues might have been manufactured by a different method.

Dichalkon's tend to have 12:00 die axis.

I can't make out the dates either, just basing my guess on the types.
