A new die combination and a rev. variant for Severus (or rather a correction?)

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 18, 3.5g
obv. AV KAI - CEVHROC
       Laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPO - LI PROC IC
Bearded Herakles, nude, stg. l., resting with r. hand on club, lion's skin over l. arm
ref. a) AMNG I/1, 1387 (1 ex., Gotha)
      b) Varbanov (engl.) 2273
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2015):
rev. No. 8.14.14.20 var.(writes NIKOPO - L PROC IC; but depicted coin very worn)
obv. e.g. No. 8.14.4.14 (same die)
numismatiklanz, E-Bay, November 2016

It is well possible hat the outer coin of HrHJ (2015) 8.14.14.20 shows this type too, but the depicted coin is very worn. Then it would be a correction.

Another example for the same reverse for more than one member of the imperial family!

And in this case useful for narrowing down the date of Septimius' coin: presumably also struck late 195-early 198 AD while Caracalla was Caesar.

An important correction for Macrinus

Macrinus, AD 217-218
AE 27, 13.7g
struck under Statius Longinus
obv. AVT K M OPEL CEV - H MAKRINOC
Bust, cuirassed (with gorgoneion on breast plate?), seen from front, laureate, r.
rev. VP.CTA.LONGINOV.NIKOPOLITWN.PROC ICT
Demeter in long chiton and mantle over her shoulders, stg. frontal, head l., resting with
raised r. hand on long burning torch, entwined by snake, and holding in extended r. hand
grain ears over open cista mystica from which snake is emerging r.
ref. a) not in AMNG:
for the rev. see AMNG I/1, [1730], (1 ex., Wiczay, lost)
      b) not in Varbanov (engl.):
          cf. #3477 (= AMNG 1730)
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2105) No. 8.23.5.8 corr. (wrong obv. description, writes AV K M
and CE - VH, writes ICTR; but depicted coins are very worn)
          obv. e.g. No. 8.23.32.6
coll. Hoeft

The obv. of this type is unusual in that here the cuirassed bust is seen from front (to show the gorgoneion?). Usually the cuirassed busts are seen from behind to show the cuirass. Now the following obv. descriptions with the same bust type have to be corrected too:
- 8.23.1.17
- 8.23.4.3
- 8.23.7.9-10
- 8.23.8.2-3

AE 28, 11.53g, 28.4mm, 45°

and resting with r. forearm on an inverted urn at his side from which water flows l.
ref. a) AMNG I/1, 1259 (1 ex., Berlin)
      b) not in Varbanov (engl.):
          cf. #2791 (rev. only)
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2015):
          rev. No. 8.14.32.3 (same die)

A completely new type for Severus

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 15, 2,36g, 15.11mm, 30°
obv. [AV KAI] CE - VHROC (read from outwards)
       Laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPOLITWN PROC ICTRO
Crescent with big 8-pointed star in the cavity, dots at the points; below the crescent a 2nd
      smaller star
ref.: a) not in AMNG
       b) not in Varbanov (engl.)
       c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2015):
rev. No. 8.18.48.9 (same die, for Caracalla!)
obv. e.g. No. 8.14.13.3 var. (read from inwards)
coll. Hoeft

Haevily corroded, but important parts clearly visible. The strange legend break CE - VHROC is known already from HrHJ (2015) 8.14.13.3, where it is AV KAI CE - VHROC.

A new example for a parallel issue for members of the imperial family!

A correction for Severus and a new obv. legend

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 17, 3.16g
obv. AV KEC C - CEVHROC
       Laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPOLIT PROC ICTR
Bust of Serapis, draped, wearing kalathos, r.
ref. a) AMNG I/1, 1349 var. (ex. #1, Berlin, has AV KE CE?)
      b) not in Varbanov (engl.)
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2015) No. 8.14.6.12 corr. (same dies, writes AV K L CE -
          CEVHROC)
coll. Bartosz A, Forum Ancient Coins

AV KEC - CEVHROC is known from small coins. HrHJ (2015) 8.14.52.13 (Basket with fruits)  has AV KE CE - CEVHROC. But AV KEC C - CEVHROC is a new variant!

Apparently new dies for Geta, though this Herakles reverse has affinities with the Septimius Severus reverse of Post 257:

AE 17, 2.62 g, Bareheaded draped bust r., . . . GETA / Herakles stg. l. naked with club, NIKOPO PROS ISTR
Temper thy haste with sloth -- Taverner / Erasmus.

Thank you for your contribution!

After visiting HrHJ (2015) and my collection I think the rev. of your coin is from the same die as my coin. Sadly the obv. of my coin is so excentrically. But I think it is from the same die too.
