Domitian provincial double portrait
« on: May 26, 2015, 03:57:16 pm »
Hi,

I’ve been struggling with this AE coin. It is approximately 20mm and features Domitian and ? (Julia Titi? Domitia?) or, at a push Trajan and Plotina(?). It doesn’t look to be Domitian and Domitia from the Thessalian Koinon (RPC II 277 & 288) as the lady’s hairstyle is markedly different but I don't have RPC II to continue the seaarch.

Apologies for the poor photo taken on my phone. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Regards,

Mauseus

Hi,

No, not Hadrian, but thank-you for your input. In hand the coin is AE, not billon, my poor photo just makes it look like silvery areas.

Regards,

Mauseus

The hairstyle is perfectly in keeping with the Thessalian League Domitias. Beyond that, I cannot read the legends to determine a more specific reference. Perhaps second emission?

Hi,

I was thinking that there was a bun on the back, like some of Julia Titi from Rome, but it could be just corrosion giving that impression so Thessaly might be the one.

Mauseus

In my opinion looks like BCD 947 (RPC 284).

Agreed, Domitian & Domitia by Thessalian League.

Hard to tell which one.
