Digital Vernier Callipers
« on: May 26, 2015, 12:52:10 pm »
I had the good fortune of being able to buy a set/pair (?) of Digital Vernier
Callipers recently. They are an excellent piece of equipment that I had not
had previously, and expect will put to good use quite a lot in the future.

These were bought locally (Sydney, Australia) for A$20 (I haggled - a LOT!).

They were on special for under A$30 (US$24/GBP£15/Euro€21*), but have
gone up to about A$35. Another 'plastic/composite' set was also on sale for
about A$11+/-. (* Exchange rates are approximate as of date of post).

I recommend them and their like to other collectors.

I have one that's very similar, bought from FORVM probably 10 years ago:

It still works fine and I think I had to replace the battery twice.

No, 'old school' would be a set, like the ones I have been using for a very long time, that have an actual vernier scale.  I am a bit unclear on how these newfangled calipers can be called 'vernier', be they dial or digital, since neither employ the vernier scale.

In any event, I'll point out that accuracy below 1mm is hardly significant on ancients unless you first define which axis you are measuring.  Is a 5mm coin 5mm up and down, across, greatest or least?

The diameter given by Forum is always greatest.

As a bit of a tech fan, I find it strangely comfortable to use a genuine vernier gauge ( as it's known in the UK) for my coins.... ( and anything else I need to measure with a degree of accuracy!)
