Not a Macedonian club and bow bronze
« on: May 23, 2015, 01:31:19 pm »
This should interest collectors of Macedonian as well as of Roman coinage. For two decades I've been looking at every Alexander III bronze from Macedon with type Herakles, club and bow (a very common coin), just on the off chance it might be a Roman quadrans of Cn.Domi, Q.Cvrt and M.Sila with type Hercules, club and bow (a very rare coin). I can now stop searching. Pic below.

Great find. Really does pay to keep looking through the Greek offerings for the mis-attribution.
Every day I know less and less about more and more. Soon I expect to know nothing about everything.

I have to admit that's not where I found it although it was where I was looking. I bought it fully attributed at retail, and very expensively. In the days when I used to scour fleabay, long past due to the proliferation of forgeries and the lack of decent genuine coins at auction today, I had hopes of finding this type for a few dollars, misattributed. I never did and regrettably have had to put down real money for it.

Great find Andrew.
As a collector of Macedonian coins I too try to look at almost
everything I come across for any variety or difference to the
standard types. I do not recall seeing any others in my time.
I'll have to keep an eye out (as if another will come along!).
All the best,

Walter
