Does this denarius need further cleaning?
« on: April 05, 2015, 09:29:51 pm »
Hi all,

I just realised this denarius still has scattered bits of old deposits on the obverse, like below the bust, above the hair, next to the nose and around the legend. I'm not sure what the deposits are, but they are stuck fast. Should I attempt to remove them? If so, what should i try? Distilled water and a toothbrush?

If it was mine, I wouldn't touch it!

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the reply. I know it looks fine as it is, it's just that the deposits look messy!

One thing that can't hurt is putting it in acetone for a few minutes. If it's some kind of glue, it might help.

Just a guess but it might be residue from some old polish.

Try to see if it budges if you prod it gently with a toothpick.

If not then acetone should remove it.

Thanks Andreas and Shawn. I'll give it a try with a toothpick and if it doesn't work then a few minute dip in acetone. Any acetone based nail polish remover should work, right?

I would buy the pure stuff. It's a must have for any coin collector anyway and not expensive.

Thanks areich. Will try to hunt some pure acetone down.

Just go to any supermarket beauty department and look for "nail polish remover - 100% acetone" with nothing else added. It's the same stuff sold in cans in any hardware store but in a much smaller container.

As a silver collector I'm never without it!
