Lucius Verus denarius interesting bust type
« on: March 18, 2015, 10:47:46 am »
Hi!

This is a very common Lucius Verus denarius TR P IIII IMP II COS II with standing Mars (RIC 514). However, the bust is only draped, but not cuirassed/draped as it should be for this issue. I checked BM online - they have 9 denarii of this type with whether bare or cuirassed/draped bust - none with just draped bust. Is this bust type for this issue recorded somewhere?

 2,77 g - 19mm -0'

Thanks for your time.

Z.

I have noted two specimens: in my collection ex CNG E276, 21 March 2012, lot 418, same dies as yours, their picture below; and Lanz, eBay, 26 March 2010.

Since WWII prevented Strack from ever publishing his Marcus-Commodus volume, we have no idea whether other specimens of this coin may or may not be lying in unpublished European public collections such as Vienna or Berlin.

Seems not to be THAT rare - here's my specimen, which I had also posted here some time.

PS: I just realize my specimen is the Ebay piece mentioned by Curtis above.

...such a nice family reunion ;)... All three coins seem to share the same ob. dies (the rev. on Rupert's coin seems to be a bit different)
